I have grown two companies from $0 to over $100
Million in sales in my career and learned Lots of secrets few people in
the world know today. When you think about it for a moment you will
realize that you cannot possibly manage a small growth company like you
would a medium size or larger company and expect to be successful. You
would never launch a product for IBM or GE like you would if you were in
a startup. With these extremes it is easy to see the need for a
different management style for your company, but how many different ways
are there to run a company and how do you know when to "shift gears"? I
have been very fortunate to have participated in all sized of companies
in my career. I have worked for two multi-billion dollar conglomerates,
Grumman Aerospace and The International Thomson Organization. I have
helped launch eight different startups now and I have grown two of those
to over $100 million in sales pretty rapidly. Along the way I have made
many mistakes and invented many systems to avoid repeating them in the
future. For the last two years I have spent the bulk of my time writing
and documenting these systems that I have developed over 15 years as a
CEO and 25 years as an entrepreneur.
How should you adjust you management
style, risk appetite, evaluation of opportunities and other factors
based on the stage of your company? I have search quite a bit looking
for books on this and yet most management books are "generic" for all
